Exploring Salzburg
Salzburg, Austria

Day 3: Today we enjoy a wonderful immersion tour of Salzburg.

food icon   Optional Dinner Tonight:  Join the Tour Captain for an optional dinner tonight in Salzburg.

City: Salzburg

A country with contrasts: From yodeling to centuries-old musical genius, from rustic farm-houses to modern cities, Austria boasts both the historic and modern in a wonderful showcase.

Salzburg is one of our favorite towns along the itinerary. The city springs to life, as it is our home for the next two nights.

The "Salt Fortress," as the city's name is literally translated, is Austria's fourth largest but both the old and the new city are perfectly sized for exploration. The "Old Town" features baroque architecture and is one of the best preserved city centers north of the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Salzburg boasts a number of notable settings we will explore.

SIGHTSEEING: Our walking tour includes the world famous gardens of Mirabell, the house where Mozart was raised and the house of his birth along the street Getreidegasse. We enjoy a visit to the Salzburg Dome Cathedral and St. Peter's Monastery.

• Gardens of Mirabell
• Mozart's Birthplace House & Residence
• Getreidegass Strausa
• Salzburg Dome Cathedral
• St. Peter's Monastery

Then continue with your Tour Captain for admission and time at the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress, and an optional visit (but included) to the Rocky Riding School (Felsenreitschule). This is the theater with a retractable roof and was the stage the Von Trapp Family Singers performed on prior to the escaping the Nazis in The Sound of Music.

Feldkirch, Austria

Day 5: Lucerne Tour & Interlaken

food icon   Included Dining: Welcome Dinner Tonight

A grand morning awaits with our first stop in Lucerne. After passing through Vaduz we will enter Switzerland passing along lakes Walensee, Obersee and Zuggersee with our sights set on Lake Lucerne. Meeting our knowledgeable Story local guide, we will engage in an informative look at the main sights of Lucerne. Lucerne, the gateway to central Switzerland, sited on Lake Lucerne, is embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama.

We’ll make sure to visit the medieval Chapel Bridge, considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. We’ll also see the figure of a dying lion which was hewn from the face of rock in remembrance of the heroic death of Swiss guards killed during an attack on the Tuileries in 1792 is one of the best-known monuments in Switzerland.

After the tour we will take time for lunch before heading off for the heart of the Alps, Interlaken. Couched between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Bernese Highlands is the fabled resort of Interlaken. With a whole network of trains, funiculars, boats, cable-cars at your disposal, Interlaken can be your springboard for journeys into the formidable Bernese Alps, ruled by three immense peaks: Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch.

Day 6: Grindelwald

Interlaken train journey to Grindelwald

food icon   Optional Dinner Tonight: Join the Tour Captain for an optional dinner tonight in Interlaken.

This morning after a hearty Swiss breakfast we head into the Alps. We will use the famous Interlaken Line for our train journey to Grindelwald, the heart of the mountainous Jungfrau Region. Once in the postcard perfect Grindelwald we will use the gondola to float up to an area high above the village known as First. With the wonderful panoramic Bergrestaurant as our base as we arrive to First, we can take in the amazing views here at the top of Europe. Thrill seekers will join the Tour Captain for a walk to the “First Cliff Walk”.  The terrace rises 45 meters out into the void. In order to reach it, visitors must first climb to dizzying heights on the west side of the First summit: on the First Cliff Walk presented by Tissot, not only is the view into the valley beautiful, so is the view of the mountainside: the rocks with their layers and niches serve as a take-off and landing place for the alpine choughs. Don’t worry if this is not for you as you can sit on the deck of the restaurant sipping Swiss Chocolate and have plenty of awe-inspiring views.

On the return Gondola you can choose to stop half way down and try a ride on a Trottibike back to the village (all downhill) in warmer months. The Trottibike inherited the best features of the scooter and the bicycle. You stand upright on a wide footboard and roll along pleasantly even on bumpy surfaces, thanks to the suspension fork and large tire with tread. Need some speed? The Trottibike awaits you. After all, it has great brakes, so you can stop at any time from Bort to Grindelwald to view the meadows and farmhouses.

You can then spend time in Grindelwald. You might enjoy a little shopping or just cozy up to a nice fire and enjoy the atmosphere of this Alpine Village in the clouds.  After your time in Grindelwald you take the train back to Interlaken with time to browse shops offering regional products like precious jewelry and watches. Or visit Harder Kulm, a mountain overlooking Interlaken, and take a cable car to the top and take in splendid views before you return in the late afternoon to your spectacular resort.

On to Zermatt & the Matterhorn

Day 7: Zermatt

Zermatt, Switzerland

food icon   Story Way® Dining: Enjoy a special Welcome dinner in Zermatt with the Tour Captain.

It's a day filled with spectacular scenery as we make our way high into the mountains to the car-free village of Zermatt, our home for the next two evenings. We wind our way through the Alps today in route to the world famous Zermatt.

Zermatt lies at the foot of the world's most famous mountains, the Matterhorn. The town is a car-free zone and has preserved its original character over the years. The region called Matterhorn glacier paradise is Europe's largest and highest summer skiing region. Numerous national ski teams train here during the summer months.

The region is legendary amongst mountaineers: the Haute Route, a challenging international route that takes several days to complete, leads from Mont Blanc to Zermatt. Over 248 miles of hiking trails lead through and out of the Matter Valley, including the mule traders' trails, which date back to the 13th century.

We check in, freshen up and then enjoy a walking orientation of the village.
