Exploring Salzburg

Salzburg, Austria

Day 3: Today we enjoy a wonderful immersion tour of Salzburg.

food icon   Optional Dinner Tonight:  Join the Tour Captain for an optional dinner tonight in Salzburg.

City: Salzburg

AUSTRIA
A country with contrasts: From yodeling to centuries-old musical genius, from rustic farm-houses to modern cities, Austria boasts both the historic and modern in a wonderful showcase.

Salzburg is one of our favorite towns along the itinerary. The city springs to life, as it is our home for the next two nights.

The "Salt Fortress," as the city's name is literally translated, is Austria's fourth largest but both the old and the new city are perfectly sized for exploration. The "Old Town" features baroque architecture and is one of the best preserved city centers north of the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Salzburg boasts a number of notable settings we will explore.

SIGHTSEEING: Our walking tour includes the world famous gardens of Mirabell, the house where Mozart was raised and the house of his birth along the street Getreidegasse. We enjoy a visit to the Salzburg Dome Cathedral and St. Peter's Monastery.

• Gardens of Mirabell
• Mozart's Birthplace House & Residence
• Getreidegass Strausa
• Salzburg Dome Cathedral
• St. Peter's Monastery

Then continue with your Tour Captain for admission and time at the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress, and an optional visit (but included) to the Rocky Riding School (Felsenreitschule). This is the theater with a retractable roof and was the stage the Von Trapp Family Singers performed on prior to the escaping the Nazis in The Sound of Music.

Lindau, Germany

Day 4: Exploring Lindau

Innsbruck, Austria

Lindau is located just over half -ay between Munich and Lucerne on Lindau Island. It started its history on the island located in beautiful Lake Constance.

Lindau is located in the most south-western corner of Bavaria in Germany, which forms a triangle with the neighboring countries of Austria and Switzerland. Around the year 800 a monastery was founded here and 100 years later the settlement Lindau was mentioned in historic writings. In 1274-1278 Lindau became an imperial town and today its historical town center features architectural highlights that demonstrate its past importance and prosperity it earned during the middle ages.

Upon arrival to our hotel, there will be time to freshen up, then join your Tour Captain for an Orientation Walkabut. Remember, rooms are not ready until 3pm usually.

Exploring Lucerne

Day 6: Lucerne, Switzerland

Lucerne, Switzerland

SIGHTSEEING IN LUCERNE: Today enjoy our walking tour of Old Town Lucerne.

Lucerne, the gateway to central Switzerland, situated on Lake Lucerne, is embedded within an impressive mountainous panorama. Thanks to its attractions, its souvenir and watch shops, the beautiful lakeside setting and the nearby excursion mountains of the Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn, the town is a destination for our small group of travelers on our journey through central Switzerland.

Complete with gable paintings, the covered, medieval Chapel Bridge forms the centrepiece of Lucerne's town-scape and is considered to be one of the oldest, covered wooden bridges in Europe. A further landmark of the town is the Museggmauer, a wall which, with the exception of only one of its towers, has been preserved in its original, well-fortified state.

Historic houses decorated with frescoes line the picturesque town squares as they do the 'Weinmarkt' square in the car-free old town. Lucerne is a city of town squares and churches. The Jesuit church dating from the 17th century is regarded as Switzerland's first sacral Baroque building and the twin towers of the Hofkirche form an integral part of the town-scape. The figure of a dying lion, which was hewn from rock in remembrance of the heroic death of Swiss guards killed during an attack on the Tuileries in 1792, is one of the best-known monuments in Switzerland.

Walking Level: Light, Leisurely Pace; Volume: Light

The balance of your day is at leisure. Perhaps explore this afternoon to Mt. Pilatus.

Optional Excursion: Spend the afternoon in the Alps on this 5.5 hour round-trip journey that includes gondola ride from Kriens to Frakmutegg terminus, aerial cable-way to the peak of Mt. Pilatus, free time at the summit, cogwheel train down to Alpnachstad, scenic cruise on Lake Lucerne (a complementary lunch in the event the boat ride does not operate) with commentary on your coach transport from Lucerne. $125 per person. Reservations required and this option is seasonal. Excludes tips, food and drinks unless specified, hotel pickup and dropoff. Cable car subject to weather, when not operational you will be transported up and down the mountain by cog-wheel train.

Zermatt
Zermatt, Switzerland & the Matterhorn

Day 7: City: Zermatt | Canton: Valais

food icon   Story Land & Sea® Way Included Dining: Welcome Dinner

It's a day filled with spectacular scenery as we make our way high into the mountains to the car-free village of Zermatt, our home for the next two evenings.

Zermatt lies at the foot of the world's most famous mountains, the Matterhorn. The town is a car-free zone and has preserved its original character over the years. The region called Matterhorn glacier paradise is Europe's largest and highest summer skiing region. Numerous national ski teams train here during the summer months.

The region is legendary amongst mountaineers: the Haute Route, a challenging international route that takes several days to complete, leads from Mont Blanc to Zermatt. Over 248 miles of hiking trails lead through and out of the Matter Valley, including the mule traders' trails, which date back to the 13th century.

We check in, freshen up and then enjoy an orientation walking orientation of the village.
