Arenal Volcano

Day 2: Scenic Drive to the Arenal Volcano

After breakfast, we're bound for La Fortuna, home to one of Costa Rica's most notable natural features is the Arenal Volcano. This impressive volcano resides within the 29,960-acre Arenal Volcano National Park. Although the volcano entered into a resting phase in 2010 – meaning that its eruptions have paused – it is still a stunning sight. Rising above the rainforest that surrounds its base, Arenal frames the skyline with near perfect symmetry.

Phoenix, AZ

Made up mostly of primary rainforest, The Arenal Volcano National Park encompasses four different life zones and harbors a tremendous amount of flora and fauna. In fact, nearly 75% of the total 850 species of birds that have been identified in Costa Rica can be found here.

The Arenal Springs Resort is located just outside the quaint town of La Fortuna, near the Arenal Volcano. Feast your eyes on the outstanding lush, green, natural beauty that abounds here and the awesomeness of one of the most active volcanoes in the world, the Arenal Volcano. Visitors longing to be surrounded by nature, birds and forest will have come to the perfect place when they arrive to the Arenal area.

This tour has it all - exciting activities, beautiful views, and plenty of nature. On this combination your you'll enjoy some of the things that Costa Rica is famous for, and will be led by friendly, professional guides. From pick-up to drop-off, this tour lasts 7.5 hours.

Once you arrive at the park, your first activity is the Sky Walk. In total, the walk is a little over 2 miles (3.5 km) long and lasts around 3 hours. The trail leads through primary rainforest and includes 5 suspension bridges, 2 observation points, and 2 waterfalls. Walking across the suspension bridges will provide you with a new perspective on the intricacies of the rainforest. The trail is in good condition, but participants should be capable of walking for several hours and navigating slight elevation changes.

Phoenix, AZ

Next up is the Sky Tram, during which you'll board a gondola and ascend through the rainforest. This tram goes slow and provides you with ample opportunities to peer into the forest and search for animals. The ride ends at an observation deck, where you'll enjoy views of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

Remember: We walk a lot on our tours! This outing requires about 3 hours time investment. You may opt out and stay at the small restaurant and shop. Option: We recommend the Sky Trek Zip-Line experience. Get your heart pounding by taking a zip-line ride through the rainforest canopy. Among the dozens of options, the one regarded as the best is Sky Trek, where you'll whizz along 1.7 miles of cables slung between towering trees. Exhilerating!

Phoenix, AZ

Cost: $49.95 per person. Zip-Line all-inclusive.

The afternoon you may opt for a plunge in the Eco Termales Hot Springs. There are four pools, one of which features a cascading waterfall, which reach up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. There is no better way to unwind after a long day than by visiting the hot springs and treating your body to its naturally replenishing effects.

Cost: $45.00 per person. Note: Timed admission at 5pm - included admission is for 4 hours from one of these starting times. (Prices subject to change).

Optional dinner at the Resort.

To Monteverde Cloud Forest
Florence Italy on the Small Group Tour

Day 4: Cloud Forest Immersion

Cool, misty cloud forest and deep green foliage is what has made Monteverde an absolute hot spot for eco tourism in the Central Highlands of Costa Rica. This zone is home to a string of volcanoes, both active and dormant, beautiful national parks and diverse weather.

A long winding dirt road off of the Pan American Highway leads to the lush mountaintop paradise of Monteverde, which is nestled between two primary cloud forest reserves. The town was founded in the 1950's by a few Quaker families that were looking to leave the U.S. and its war behind. The absence of a military made Costa Rica the perfect fit. They settled in the area now called Monteverde and established dairy farms which would eventually supply the Monteverde Cheese Factory. Shortly after their arrival they established the wildlife sanctuary of Monteverde.

Phoenix, AZ

Once you've reached the mountaintop you'll first come upon the quaint town of Santa Elena. Here you'll find gift stores, accommodations, a bus stop, restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, banks and much more. Though Monteverde does not have a town center, it is comprised of a dirt road that leads to the Cloud Forest Reserve. Spread out along the walkable road are hotels, cafes, restaurants, galleries, and excellent views.

The spectacular Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve attracts scientists, bird watchers, and wildlife lovers from all parts of the world. Inside the reserve you can explore the virgin forests and multi-century old strangler fig trees on your way to a viewpoint which sits on the continental divide. On a clear day you can see both the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts. The reserve is also one of the few remaining homes of the endangered resplendent Quetzal; the opportunity to see this exotic bird is worth the trip alone.

Upon arrival we will enjoy time to relax and take in the sights, sounds and smells of our unique surroundings. Located in Costa Rica's lush cloud forest and nestled in the mountaintops of the Monteverde Reserve, the venerable, world-renowned Hotel Belmar offers guests truly unique experiences full of natural wonder, elegance, and warm friendly service – all within an unprecedented sensitivity to the preservation of the environment. We call this experience The Art of Nature – a simple phrase that sums up our commitment to the exquisite and beautiful natural experiences our guests will enjoy during their time spent at Hotel Belmar.

Story Exclusive:
This evening you have the chance for something very thrilling and unique, the Hidden Valley Night Tour. Hidden Valley is a small nature reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Touring the reserve at night gives travelers the opportunity to spot an array of impressive nocturnal creatures. It's estimated that upwards of 80 percent of wildlife is active at night. This tour is ideal for travelers who wish to discover the nocturnal wonders of the forest. The tours are led by bilingual, professionally trained naturalist guides. The guides will spot and explain various creatures that you come across, including snakes, spiders (especially tarantulas), tree frogs, coatimundis, agoutis, sloths, and armadillos.

Join the Tour Captain for an optional dinner tonight.

Manuel Antonio NP

Day 7: Manuel Antonio National Park and Sunset Catamaran Cruise.

We will get an early start today as we drive south along the coast to the Manuel Antonio National Park to begin our walking tour. Created in 1972 to preserve the richness of the forest and the idyllic beaches, Manuel Antonio is home to many of Costa Rica's endangered species. Don't let the size fool you, the smallest of Costa Rica's National Parks, which encompasses almost 1,700 acres of land and 136,000 acres of ocean, is regarded as one of the best.

Phoenix, AZ

Manuel Antonio National Park is internationally recognized as being one of the most biodiverse parks on the planet. Its lush tropical forests, lagoons, mangroves & pristine white sandy beaches make up one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world.

Among its 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds, some of the frequently viewed residents include white-faced and howler monkeys, two and three-toed sloths as well as iguanas. The endangered squirrel monkey makes the park its home.
