Day 2: Heidelberg, Germany

Welcome: Upon arrival to Heidelberg, we will venture out for an orientation of your surroundings and take time for a little lunch before checking in to our city center hotel to prepare for our first evening at the Christmas Markets.

Christmas Markets: With hundreds of booths across five city squares wafting with intoxicating scents of cinnamon, roasted chestnuts and roasted almonds, the market is filled with Heidelberg natives as well as regional and international guests. The mighty medieval castle as a backdrop and "Germany's most beautiful ice rink" that's surrounded by trees and glistening with stars, make this an impressive setting. Holiday cheer and insights about life, past and present, are waiting to be experienced here.

Day 3: Heidelburg Immersion and Market Visits

Sightseeing Tour: The Story of Heidelberg
Heidelburg's Old Town is filled with interesting museums and galleries, as well as winding alleys and intriguing squares warmed by a glow of light. A guided tour in the Old Town is filled with interesting stories - whether Germany's oldest University, the Jesuit Quarter, the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heliggeiskirche) or any of the other sights. The route goes through the magical atmosphere of one of the longest pedestrian zones in all of Europe.

There will be ample time for you to enjoy the sights and sounds of Heidelberg at your own pace this afternoon before the market festivities begin.

Christmas Markets
Heidelberg's Christmas market extends to over five beautiful and historic market squares: Kornmarkt, Marktplatz, Universitätsplatz, Anatomiegarten and the Bismarckplatz.

Rothenburg and Nuremberg

Day 4: Rothenberg

Rothenburg Visit
This morning we depart Heidelberg and head to one of Gemany's most picturesqe villages, Rothenburg ob der Tauber. We will have plenty of time to visit this beautiful little medieval hamlet, have lunch and shop for Christmas items before setting off for Nuremburg.

Nuremberg Arrival
Upon arrival we check in to our city center hotel with time to freshen up before setting off for the Markets.

Christmas Markets
Nuremberg has one of the largest and most famous Christmas markets which is opened by its symbol, the Nuremberg Christkind (Golden Angel). Every week from Tuesday-Friday the Christkind visits the Christkinlesmarkt daily at 3pm. Millions of shoppers visit the 180+ candy cane-striped booths fillled with crafts, toys, ornaments and gifts from around the world. Enjoy the scents and tastes of Nuremberg sausages, gingerbread (Lubkuchen) and hot mulled wine. Look for the "Nuremburg Plum People", tiny puppets made of prune limbs, fig torsos and walnut heads.

Day 5: Nuremberg Immersion & Christmas Markets

Sightseeing Tour: The Story of Nuremberg
Beginning at the Frauentorturm (across from the Grand Hotel), the walking tour takes us up ot the castle, first going through the former site of St. Klara's Monestary, Mauthalle, St. Lawrence Church, Nassauerhaus, Heilig-Geist-Spital, Chapel of Our Lady, Main Market Square, Beautiful Fountain, Fleischbruke, Weinstadel, Kettensteg, Tannyer's Alley, Church of St. Sebald and Tiegartnartorplace, ending the Old Town tour at Fembohaus, Nuremberg's only remaining large late Renaissance mercant's house.

Explore on your own. Nuremberg is known for advances in printing - home to Europe's first printing press - as well as advances in science, technology and astronomy. The National Germanic Museum has impressive collections of paintings, decorative arts, coins and archives. Many of the city's old medieval buildings have been restored despite serious World War 2 damage.

Day 6: Arrive Munich

We depart Nurenberg this morning in route to Munich. Arriving to Munich in the late morning we will secure our luggage and set out for an orientation walk of our surroundings as well as have lunch before returning to the hotel.

Arriving back to the hotel we check in and relax a while before heading out for Christmas Market activities.

Christmas Markets
Over the surface of 20,000 square metres, 3 million people visit the Marienplatz for a market full or ornaments, gifts and food. In the middle of the market stands a glittering 85 foot Christmas tree, surrounded by visitors munching on ruber-datschi (potato pancakes), sausages and gingerbread and sipping on Gluhwein (hot mulled wine). The "Heavenly Workshop" in the Town Hall's pub is where children, dressed as angels, practice their skills at baking cookies, arts and crafts, preparing them to be marketers one day. Listen to the sounds of string and wind players, singers and choirs at 530pm every evening from the balcony of the Town Hall.

Day 7: Morning Tour of Munich

Sightseeing Tour: The Story of Munich
Starting the morning at Max-Joseph-Platz, where the National Theatre and Residenz are located , it's one of four of Munich's royal avenues which got its name from King Maximillian II of Bavaria, as he is the one who planned and started it in 1850. The Residenz, the largest palace in Germany, is the former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs of the House of Wittelsbach.

After the tour there will be time for lunch and self exploration of Munich.

Christmas Markets
Many smaller Christmas markets including the famed Kripperlmarkt (Crib Market), where Bavarian and Tyrolean nativity figures are sold, and a Medieval Market are scattered throughout Munich. There's also a Christmas tram running through the old city, serving Gluwein (hot mulled wine) and gingerbread.

Salzburg, Austria

Day 8: Transfer to Salzburg

This morning we set off for Salzburg. Upon arrival we will secure our luggage at the hotel, freshen up enjoy an orientation walkabout with the Tour Captain. Returning to the hotel around 2:00 pm when rooms are ready for occupancy.

Arriving back to the hotel, we check in and relax before this afternoon and evening festivities begin anew.

Salzburg has one of Europe's oldest Christmas markets, dating back to the 15th century, yet it's one of the smaller markets with under 100 stalls. The cathedral, medieval castles on cliffs in the background, as well as fountains encased for the winter, are part of the unique setting. Enjoy the Lebkuchen (gingerbread), sausages, hot mulled wine, and roasted almonds and chestnuts while shopping for pewter crafts, loden coats, slippers, Christmas decorations and toys.

The walking tour includes the house where Mozart was born as well as the house where he was raised along the street Getreidegasse, the famous gardens of Mirabell, Salzburg Dome Cathedral and St. Peter's Monastery.

Just south of town at the Schloss Helibrum, the 17th century palace built for Salzburg's archbishop-princes, visit one of the world's largest Advent calendars. The palace has 24 windows on its facade - just right for an Advent calendar. There's also a living Nativity and crafts market.


Day 10: Salzburg Leisure

Exploring at Leisure
May we suggest a thorough perusla of the many hand-painted Christmas ornaments, elaborate holiday decorations, handcrafted candles, porcelain angels and many other gift ideas can be found at the enchanting Christmas market at Sternarkaden. Enjoy! Or perhaps the the Salzburger Hirtenadvent at 11:00 am this much to see and do.
