A Letter from founder, Mark Story

Dear African Safari Explorer,

If you’ve ever been to Africa or, like me, fallen in love with it through National Geographic® and the many movies and books that have been inspired by Africa, then you can see how Karen Blixen also fell in love with her Africa. And although our Safaris are set in Kenya & Tanzania (to experience a less-touristic and more authentic Safari reminiscent of the 1920s Safari), I know Ms. Dinesen and her story has inspired thousands to journey to this amazing land. I invite you to join us on one or both of these Safaris.

This is no 'ordinary Safari.' This is a tented "glamorous" camping experience with accommodations under canvas complete with en-suite bathrooms (and of course, flush toilets and hot showers). Each also features a private verandah from which you may enjoy game viewing, reading, or just absorbing the magical scenery around you. The dining is second to none as we enjoy Chef-prespared meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner with all-included premium beverages, wine, and sparkling and natural water. The staff will serve gourmet dinners by candlelight. We will enjoy picnics and lunches under the welcoming shade of acacia trees, using fresh, seasonal ingredients and at days’ end, we'll spend time lounging before a roaring fire, sipping cocktails while watching in quiet reflection as creation's wonders unveil the evening Story!

Another renown author, Frances Mayes, once said that "...most trips have an underlying quest. We're looking for something. What? Fun, escape, adventure--but then what?" Everyone travels for different reasons, but my question for you would be what are you looking for?"

No matter what the answer to that question may be, I can guarantee one thing-this trip can be life changing. To experience Africa, to open your eyes to another part of the world, to step in another's shoes, if even for a few days, it changes you, even if only a little. Story's African expedition is set. Are you ready to explore? Join fellow Story Alumni and Guests on our special departures in 2018 and 2019.

Good Travels,

Mark Story,
Executive Director

Day 2

Tanzania

To Ngorongoro Crater & Highlands

This morning we will depart Arusha in our Safari equipped vehicles making our way towards Ngorangoro we will engage in our first game drive. After a stop for a picnic lunch today we continue our game drive before arriving to our luxury lodge for the evening. Facing the always magnificent sunsets to the west, and located at the highest point on Ngorongoro crater's entire rim, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge stands well over half a kilometer above the crater floor and offers unparalleled views across this enormous caldera. There will be time to freshen up this afternoon before we gather to watch the sun set over this magnificent wonder of the world.

Ngorongoro Crater

Buffet style breakfast and dinners with appetizing contemporary modern cuisine is prepared from the freshest produce, flavored and garnished using only the highest quality. A classic meeting spot is ‘Hatari’ Tavern (named after John Wayne’s movie made in 1962). John Wayne and the rest of the cast were frequent visitors to the hotel. Hatari has a large television screen to watch the latest sporting events and news made complete with the relaxed informal and comfortable surroundings.

ACCOMMODATION: NGORONGORO SOPA LODGE, 1 Night
Permanent Lodge
The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge has an ideal location, as the only hotel on the east rim of the Crater it has commanding views into the Crater and is the only lodge situated to witness sunset across the Crater. Best of all it is perched by one of the only two access roads into the Crater and this road is used by only about 5% of the Crater traffic. This means you can take a picnic breakfast and be amongst the first to enter allowing you to get in faster and get more space away from the crowds for the prime early hours of the day. The hotel is comfortable and a good value for its outstanding location.

Ngorongoro Crater

Day 3

To the Namiri Plains

More of Ngorongoro Crater

Today, plan a full day to expand our scope of this amazing game reserve. We will be on the lookout for the Big Five.....Rhinos, Buffaloes, Leapords, Lions and Elephants. The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and is commonly referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. With walls approx 2,000 feet high and 13 miles wide, the crater is a natural amphitheatre for the densest populations of large animals anywhere in Tanzania. Traveling through the crater on todays game drive we will most likely encounter a multitude of wildlife up close and personal. We make our way this day to the Serengeti where we base in our luxury tented camp for the next three nights. En route we plan to make a stop at a Maasai village for a culture experience.

The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group of semi-nomadic people living in northern Tanzania and Kenya, and they are the only group allowed free travel over the border. The Maasai reside near many game parks and their dress is very distinctive. Consequently, they are probably the most well-known African ethnic group in the world.

NGORONGORO CRATER
Lion, Hyeana, Black Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, Zebra, Wildebeest
The Ngorongoro Crater is often called the 8th Wonder of the World. The crater was formed when a volcano collapsed creating the largest unbroken caldera on earth, almost 2,000 feet deep and 13 miles wide. Nearly 25,000 large mammals reside within the crater including some of Africa’s highest densities of lions and spotted hyenas.

This is the best location in Tanzania to spot the highly endangered black rhino. Elephant, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest are all common and within this confined habitat very close up viewing is often possible.

ACCOMMODATION: NAIMIRI PLAINS CAMP, 3 Nights

Day 4

On Safari: Namiri Plains

Central Serengeti, Tanzania - 3 Nights in Luxury Tented Camping

We continue to explore and discover new experiences throughout the Central Serengeti. Each day brings a new chapter for our journey. Soak it in. Breathe in the Serengeti. Experience the wilds of Africa the way it used to be.

Ngorongoro Crater

Imagine an area where the sun seldom dawns without cheetah gaining on prey, rarely a day passes without spotting a leopard draped over the branch of a tree, and most nights are filled with the roar of lions. This is where our partner Asilia's Namiri Plains Camp opened in 2014. Namiri means, "Big Cat!"

Closed to the world for over 20 years to create a safe haven for cheetah breeding and research, today the area has an exceptional population of big cats including one of the highest densities of cheetah in East Africa.

Located 1.5 hours east of the popular Seronera area of the central Serengeti you will find very few vehicles.

Our approach to game sightseeing was inspired by our experiences with Denver-based Safari outfitter, The Wild Source, under the direction of wildlife biologist Bill Given. We encourage you to visit their website to learn about their unique approach to Africa - www.thewildsource.com).

The Story Africa Professional Guides have a no mileage limit policy that allows our guests easy exploration of the game rich sections of the Serengeti.

Namiri Plains Camp is in a favorite location of our Safari team as it is tucked into the eastern edge of the Seronera Valley. Located near the banks of the spring-fed Ngarenyuki River, as well close proximity to the Sametu Marsh, Barafu Kopjes, and Research Kopjes this location provides stunning opportunities for game viewing. We have found it an ideal location for nearby private big cat viewing as well as 'in-camp' viewing:

Namiri Plains Camp has been designed to combine the traditional bush style with a fresh modern feel focusing on attention to detail and high levels of personalised service. This eight-tented camp is ideal for safari enthusiasts wanting bush luxury, advanced guiding and a deeper wildlife experience.

Tonight enjoy a special dining experience from the Chef at Namiri.

Day 5

Namiri Plains

Central Serengeti

Central Serengeti

Today after a great breakfast we feature a full day game drive in the Central Serengeti with your Namiri Guides. For 20 years, the grasslands of the Eastern Serengeti were closed to tourists to allow the cheetah population to replenish itself. Today, this is big-cat territory, where cheetah roam the area in pursuit of prey, and lion and leopard hunt undisturbed.

Story Exclusive®: Amazing. We use this word to describe our Unique Perspectives Experience of the Serengeti Sunset tonight. In the company of Story Guests and your Tour Captain along with our Namiri staff —  we present, Africa!

Day 6

Serengeti

Lion Pride in the Serengeti

Northern Serengeti

This morning we are off to the airstip for another airhop to our next location in the Northern Serengeti, Kogatende. We will meet our Sayari guide upon arrival and head out for wildlife viewing on our game drive. We enjoy a wonderful picnic lunch in route and arrive to our camp in the afternoon where we will have time for drinks around the fireplace before another amazing evening in the Serengeti. The award-winning Sayari Camp is renowned for extraordinary wildlife sightings and supreme comfort. Set on the unspoilt plains of the Northern Serengeti, close to the famous Lamai Wedge, Sayari gives you easy access to the Mara River and multiple river crossing points.

Day 7

The Mara River

Mara River Crossing

A magnificent day on Safari in far north Serengeti included the opportunity for viewing elephants and it is excellent big cat country with leopards and lion tucking into the rock kopjes areas and cheetah working the open plains. The area is best known for one of natures most dramatic spectacles as the great migration herds of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River on a near daily basis. The crossings typically take place from mid-July through early October but do vary year to year.

Day 8

Farewell to the Serengeti

Kilimanjaro Airport Area, Tanzania

This morning, en route to the airstrip we take our final game drive on the Serengeti. Transfer by Asilia to Kogatende airstrip for a morning flight back to Arusha in time for lunch. We plan a visit to the Maasai Market and Cultural Heritage Center. We will also offer an optional visit from the Cultural Center to the Tanzanite Experience with time to shop. A bit later we transfer to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure flights home.

More About the Safari

TANZANIA'S JEWELSERENGETI
Tanzania’s "jewel" is the Serengeti (from the Maasai language, Maa, meaning Endless Plains). Located in northern Tanzania, it extends to south-western Kenya and spans some 12,000 square miles and hosts the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world.

Our expedition will split time between the Central Serengeti and the Northern Serengeti to offer the best chances of tracking down some large herds of the great migration. At this time of year the migration of more than 2 million animals is typically found in huge numbers in the Northern Serengeti. This is where we often witness the dramatic crossings of the Mara River that are featured in so many films about Africa.

"BIG 5"
Both Serengeti areas are fantastic for the big cats, truly among the best in all of Africa. We will see a full diversity of species, typically around 30 different species of mammals including the "Big 5:" lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

UNIQUE APPROACH TO SAFARI: 1920s Authenticity
Most group safaris have to keep a strict schedule and daily planned itinerary for their short stay in each area. This approach (like much of the traditional touring industry) did not appeal to us. Therefore it does not apply to us as we will enjoy our small group Safari characteristic of the early safaris from the 1920s. This means we have taken measures to ensure daily flexibility which helps us to ensure the best wildlife viewing experiences. Our Safari will stay longer in the prime areas, where we are able to respond to the ever-changing rythyms of the African wildlife!

EXPERT GUIDES - TRULY, EXPERT.
Each day our three expert Story Africa Guides, along with your Tour Captain, will discuss what they see happening in the bush, and how to best craft each day for maximum enjoyment and discovery.

Safari Guide & Guest

BEST WILDLIFE VIEWING - THE TYPICAL DAY ON SAFARI
The best wildlife viewing is typically in the early morning hours and the last hours of daylight. As such, we will rise as the wildlife noise begins, usually around 5:30am each day.

You will enjoy waking in the Serengeti as you receive a "soft" wake-up with delivery of coffee or tea to your tent door. By 6:00am, we are meeting at the Lounge Tent for a light bite before taking advantage of the prime game viewing time.

Lunch on the Serengeti

We will enjoy picnics and lunches under the welcoming shade of acacia trees, using fresh, seasonal ingredients and at days’ end, we'll spend time lounging before a roaring fire, sipping cocktails while watching in quiet reflection as creation's wonders unveil!

BREAKFAST: SAFARI STYLE
We are dedicated to our authentic approach to Safari: This means each day will feature a few hours of game driving and then we will return for a fully-cooked breakfast, or some days will feature taking breakfast to the bush to allow us to explore further a field without a return to camp.

LUNCH: SAFARI STYLE
Our experience for lunch will be likewise: return to camp for a full lunch, or take picnic to the bush. Each day a new plan will be made by our expert guides and your Tour Captain. And our Safari team has a "no mileage limit" policy which means no limits!

FLEXIBILITY NOT FOUND IN MOST SAFARIS
Having the expert guides experience and wisdom means our Safari will be flexible so as to change the plan throughout the day as our wildlife sightings dictate.

IN THE FIELD VIEWING
Some days we may choose to take full days to visit exciting areas that require more time to reach. Some days will allow for siesta time after which we head back to the bush for an afternoon game drive.

Best of all, with our three outstanding guides and specially-modified vehicles, we have much-needed flexibility rarely offered in modern safaris. A typical day on our Safari can often offer more than one schedule or experience. This means we may operate an "out-all-day" vehicle for our "hard core" game viewers, and an alternate vehicle that returns to camp for a full, mid-day break for more relaxation time.

WORLD-CLASS SERVICE
Our expert Story Africa Guides and camp staff are commited to world-class service.

EVENING FIRE
One of the highlights of our Story Africa Safaris is each evening returning to our camp to gather around the campfire. A tradition on Safari since the 1920s, this is a delightful time as well as a great social experience while we enjoy our favorite Safari drink, and recount the amazing sights and experiences of our day together.

Mark Story with Guest

We then move on to dinner on Safari, usually around 8:00pm.

THE SAFARI DINNER EXPERIENCE
Our dinner experience during our Safari is sure to be one of the many highlights of our time together as the staff prepares and serves gourmet dinners by candlelight –  under the stars (and sometimes tents based on weather). Following dinner you may return to the fire for a nightcap or turn in for a sound sleep before another early morning expedition in one of the world’s most amazing destinations.

Yes, we can arrange your air travel from the Story air department. We'll work with you to get the absolutely lowest-fare available based on your travel preferences. We utilize both our own air department and online agencies to find the best rate.

Large suitcases of dimensions greater than 22" x 14" x 9" are impossible to store in vehicles and on aircraft and should not be used.

ACCOMMODATIONS
All accommodations as indicated in the itinerary based on double occupancy rooms with private baths or shower.

MEALS AND BEVERAGES
As indicated in the itinerary (daily breakfast, lunch and dinner as detailed). Coffee and tea is provided with all included meals. Local bottled water is provided in tents/lodge rooms and in vehicles during sightseeing excursions. TRANSFERS

Please Note: At international airports in East Africa, passengers cannot be met on arrival (or assisted with departure) inside secured areas (including immigration, customs halls, and baggage claim areas). On arrival your Story Land & Sea®® representative (holding a yellow sign placard with the Story Land & Sea® logo), will greet you as you exit these restricted sectors. On departure, you will be escorted to the doors of the main terminal building. This is due to airport security regulations for arrivals and departures and is beyond Story Land & Sea®'s control.

While Story Land & Sea® and our correspondent companies and organizations will endeavor to protect your property, baggage, personal effects, and other possessions, they are carried at your own risk. Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance is required.

SIGHTSEEING
All sightseeing as specified in the itinerary including entrance fees. Surface transportation and game viewing provided in four-wheel-drive safari land cruisers with roof hatches. Unless a private vehicle has been requested and confirmed for exclusive use by your party, you will share camp vehicles with other guests. Private vehicles will be used for city transfers.

GUIDES/LECTURERS/STAFF
The services of professional English-speaking guide(s) residing at the camps and a professional safari guide throughout will be provided as indicated in the itinerary.

TAXES/SERVICE CHARGES
Hotel taxes and service charges included for all services in the itinerary.

REQUIRED
Medical evacuation service via a temporary membership with Flying Doctors is included should such services be required. Please note however that this does not include hospitalization expenses. Therefore we require that all travelers purchase adequate trip cancellation, interruption, medical, and baggage insurance.

Please Note: Internal air flights within Africa often make numerous stops to offload passengers at various camps and landing strips between initial take-off and en route to final landing and a change of plane may be required on some routes. While we sympathize with any inconvenience this may cause, please be aware this is a circumstance beyond Story Land & Sea®'s control. Most internal air flights are operated using Coach/Economy Class only, and Business Class may not be available. All internal flights are subject to change.

International and on-Safari airfares are not included in tour cost. On-Safari airfare is required. Please see Dates & Rates Tab.
